Peggy Lee : Is That All There Is ? (0139)

Comme Both Sides Now, dont je vous parlais hier, Is That All There Is ? est un standard discret sur le thème de la désillusion, écrit par le tandem Jerry Leiber et Mike Stoller. Il en existe de nombreuses versions, mais la plus célèbre est incontestablement celle de Peggy Lee. Lorsqu'elle l'enregistre, en 1969, la chanteuse n'est plus toute jeune. Elle joue finement de son âge, avec une diction évoquant tour à tour la femme mûre qu'elle est et la candeur de la jeune fille qu'elle fut.

Loin du rock'n roll qui fit la célébrité de Leiber et Stoller (Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Kansas City...) l'univers musical du morceau tient plus du récitatif de comédie musicale que de la chanson à proprement parler. Seul le refrain est chanté, mais les violons et les cuivres ne cessent de commenter la narration, évoquant par exemple l'univers du cirque lorsqu'il en est question dans les paroles. Plus sombre dans son inspiration, le tandem fait cependant toujours preuve du même esprit qui habitait sespremiers hits, surprenant toujours l'auditeur dans ses attentes et semblant réagir aux vicissitudes de la vie avec un haussement d'épaules ironique. Le thème de l'incendie ou celui du suicide, évacué dans une chute réduisant à néant tout pathos, sont à ce titre exemplaires.

Particulièrement adaptée au cinéma, Is That All There Is ? a notamment été utilisée par Martin Scorsese dans After Hours, qui est sans doute mon film préféré. Après une nuit en tous points apocalyptique, le héros y danse un slow avec une femme mystérieuse, dans un squat improbable de Soho, en écoutant cette chanson, qui semble d'un seul coup résumer obscurément l'ensemble du film. Dans le Basquiat de Julian Schnabel, que je n'ai pas vu, on peut apparemment l'entendre par PJ Harvey, qui en a enregistré une bonne reprise dans les années 90, accompagnée de son complice John Parish.
